Beaches in Karnataka

The enchanting coastline is a rich cocktail of palm groves, white sands, calm beaches, greenish blue water and a colourful culture. Karnataka boasts of a 320 km long coastline, with numerous beaches which offer some relief for people looking for a break. A visitor will find the spontaneity of the coastal folk and the delicious cuisine very charming as will the serenity and the unspoilt charm of the sea win his heart.

Karwar
Karwar, is a good place to enjoy the thrills of sun, sea and sand. The beauty of Karwar inspired the great poet Rabindranath Tagore to write his first play. Lying just 100 kms from Goa this place offers attractions such as the Sadashivgad Hill Fort with a Durga temple, the one-of-its kind octagonal church and the 300 year old Venkataramana temple with some fine ochre paintings. The Dandeli Game park located 157 km away is a treat for wildlife lovers.

Gokarna
This place lies 60 kilometres to the south of Karwar. The coastal town has an ancient temple with an Atmalinga. This place is renowned for Sanskrit schools and learning. Nearby are the fabulous Om Beach and the Kutle Beach.

Banavasi is a historical place near Sirsi. 60 kilometres from here is Yana, a small unique villages with rock formations. Yana is an ideal place for rock-climbers. Bhatkal is 135 kilometres south and is a historical town with beautiful and interesting Jain monuments. This place is an ancient port with temples. The scenic holy place of Murdeshwar is 16 kilometres away. This temple attracts a lot of devotees and tourists. Off the Murdeshwar coast is the Pigeon Island, which is undiscovered and thankfully unspoilt.

The Shivaganga Falls are 140 kilometres away, amidst scenic surroundings, the river Souda falls into a deep valley from a height of 74 metres to form the falls. Dandeli is a popular holiday resort, 93 kilometres from Karwar. There is a wild life sanctuary here, which displays a variety of rare animals. The place houses a cave with Shivalinga-like laterite formations. Magod falls are 80 kilometres from Karwar. The Bedti river dives into a 180-metre rocky valley in two leaps. The Lalguli Falls are formed from the river Kali. Another attraction is the Malemane falls.

Marwanthe
Watersports and beach resorts make Marwanthe a unique seaside town, an enjoyable holiday spot. It is bordered by the Arabian Sea and the West Coast Highway on one side and the Sauparnika river on the other. The sunsets here are truly breathtaking. A drive down this stretch can be a very memorable experience. This beach is 66 km north of Mangalore and 6 km from Udipi. 

It is a popular picnic spot and the waters are safe for swimming what with huge but gentle tides beckoning you and mesmerising you to come and play with them. Due to the pristine beauty and peaceful surroundings of its virgin beach it is a very family kind of beach where one can come to in the evenings and just relax and let the smooth breeze caress you and tease your hair. 

The endless stretch of golden sand, swaying palm trees, clear blue sky and the gush of the sea attracts tourists to this spot. Between October - January is the best time to visit this place. The St Mary's Island is another delightful holiday destination. It is just a boat ride away. Baindur is a small town, 45 km from Maravanthe. It has a beautiful beach nearby. Ottanane near Baindur is famous for its glorious sunsets.

Malpe
Malpe, just 6 kilometres from Udupi and 110 kilometres north of Mangalore, is a quiet beach retreat with a sheltered harbour. It's also known for its temple with the fascinating idol of Lord Krishna. The St. Mary's Isles makes an ideal picnic spot. Close by is Ullal, yet another beach resort, from whose silvery beaches one can see breathtaking sunsets viewed through the casuarina groves.
